Pentecost celebrated at Shap. |
Worshippers at St. Michael’s church, Shap enjoyed a lively and inspiring service to mark Pentecost or Whit Sunday. Following a welcome by church warden Elsie Davidson, the service was conducted by Canon David Jenkins, the Director of the Diocesan Board of Education. |

Knit 2gether |
The contemporary craft tour ‘Knit 2gether’ visited Shap over three days. The exhibition was staged in the Memorial Hall, with visitors walking under a lace effect hanging knitted from paper. |

Local History Society looks at Victorian Shap. |
Shap Local History Society will open its summer exhibition in the Heritage Centre at the Market Cross over the May Bank Holiday weekend. This year’s topic ‘The development of Shap in the Reign of Queen Victoria’ will look at the major events and changes seen by the village during that period. |

2007 Nativity plays at Shap |
The pupils at Shap Endowed C of E Primary School performed two separate plays for relatives and friends in the lead up to Christmas, and both had a nativity theme. All donations at both plays were for this years chosen charity, Barnardos. |

Christmas fundraising for Shap church. |
The annual Christmas fundraising day in aid of St. Michael’s church, Shap was held in the Memorial hall on Friday. The event included stalls selling festive fare and gifts, competitions, a raffle and a separate draw for a magnificent Christmas hamper. |

Advent Sunday was marked at Shap with a Family service in St Michael’s church. The congregation was welcomed by Revd Carole Marsden and Janet Wood was organist for a selection of lovely Advent hymns. |

Remembrance Day at Shap. |
Armistice Day was marked at Shap with a village Act of Remembrance in St. Michael’s church. The service began shortly before eleven o’clock when the standard of the Royal British Legion Women’s Section carried by Bill Martindale led representatives of the village organisations into the church. |

Staff and pupils of Shap Endowed Church of England Primary School had much to celebrate when the newly completed building was officially opened by the Right Revd Graham Dow, Bishop of Carlisle. |

Latintastic was fantastic |
There was a distinctly South American atmosphere in Shap Memorial Hall when Salsa Theatre Productions performed ‘Latintastic’. Unfortunately the evening attracted a small turn-out; however those who made the effort were rewarded by a performance that was both lively and amusing. |

Members of one of Shap’s ancient and prominent families gathered in Shap Memorial Hall recently for a special exhibition and family day dedicated to of the Lowis family history. |

Worshippers experience the peace of Keld Chapel. |
The annual summer service was held in Keld Chapel near Shap over the Bank Holiday weekend; the congregation was down a little on recent years, but the special atmosphere of the ancient chapel made the vent a special as ever. |

Mrs Amy Johnson, 100th birthday |
A well known resident of Shap celebrated her 100 th birthday this week 18 th October 2007; Amy Johnson who has lived the community for the past 46 years is a native of Jamaica. |

Harvest festival Celebrations |
Harvest celebrations at Shap were observed on the first weekend of October, and St Michaels’s church had been beautifully decorated with flowers by women of the parish in readiness for the services. On the Friday pupils, teachers from Shap Primary School together with families attended for their own worship led by Revd Carole Marsden. |

The bells of St Michael’s church, Shap rang in welcome to a large gathering of people who packed the church to capacity for the Michaelmas confirmation of 21 candidates from parishes in the Appleby Deanery. |

Shap Flower Show |
The annual Shap Flower Show organised by St. Michael’s church was held in the Memorial Hall on Monday. Entries were little down overall on last year; this may have been due in some part to the decision to hold the event on Bank Holiday Monday instead of the Saturday. |

Two
Victorian Tales |
Shap Memorial Hall was the venue
for the one-man dramatisation of Two Victorian Tales
by two of the 19 th century’s best known authors,
Charles Dickens and Thomas Hardy. The audience were
welcomed by Janet Wood, who announced that ‘Once
a Lady’ the play about the life of Charlotte
Deans, a Cumbrian-born travelling player, who once
performed in Shap, is to have its opening night at
Shap in February. |

Epiphany
at Shap. |
The monthly family worship in St.
Michael’s church, Shap took the form of a Christingle
service to mark Epiphany. Worshippers were welcomed
by the Revd Carole Marsden, and the organist was
Janet Wood. The bible reading telling of the visit
of the Wise Men was read by Katie Hale. |

Railway
anniversary exhibition is a big hit. |
The weekend exhibition organised
by Shap Local History Society to mark the 160th anniversary
of the opening of the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway
proved most popular and attracted a lot of visitors
over the three days. |

Christmas performances. |
Pupils from Shap C.E. Primary school
performed to capacity audiences in the run up to
Christmas. The older pupils gave a performance of ‘Cinders’ in
the Memorial Hall, where the audience were welcomed
by head teacher Lois Whittaker. |

Shap has been a busy place over the
past couple of weeks with a wide variety of events
being organised for all ages. |

Major
repair work starts on Shap Church |
Worshippers at St. Michael’s
Church, Shap are looking forward to banishing buckets
from the church. For many years any rainfall has
resulted in countless buckets being placed beneath
leaks from the roof, and many gallons of water must
have been collected in this way. |

A host
of Angels at Shap |
There was a host of angels adorning
the gardens of Shap on Sunday when a Gardening Angels
Day was organised by members of St. Michael’s
church. |

Sunday |
A variety of events were held in
Shap on Sunday, in the past this would have been
the Rose Fete weekend, and so an effort was made
to hold a community day. |

VISIT
TO COCKERSAND ABBEY. |
The first of this summer’s
outings for Shap Local History Society took them
over the county boundary into Lancashire, when they
visited a number of ecclesiastical sites. |

Tales
of Alston Moor. |
Members of Shap Local History Society were welcomed by secretary
Liz Amos, who then introduced the speaker Alistair Robertson,
the Vice Chairman of the Alston Moor History Group, who gave
an entertaining account of the history of Alston Moor he also
said that he had found three slight links to Shap, the first
of these being the altitude and heavy snowfalls.

There was a good attendance at the
fifth Annual General Meeting of the Shap Local History
Society, held in the Green Room of the memorial hall.
The Chairman, Jean Jackson welcomed the gathering
and reported another successful year of lectures,
an exhibition and a social evening. |

at Shap |
St. Michael’s Church, Shap
was well filled for the confirmation of eleven candidates
from the Appleby Deanery. The Revd Carole Marsden
welcomed the congregation, and the service began
with a procession led by Katie Hale carrying the
cross, the Vicar of Shap and Bampton, the Revd Carole
Marsden, the Rural Dean, Canon Anthony Clegg, and
the Bishop of Carlisle |

MEETING
OF SHAP LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY |
When Shap Local History Society met
for their March meeting they were welcomed by Vice
Chairman Jean Scott-Smith; who introduced the guest
speaker Anton Hodge. Mr Hodge hails from over the
Border, he studied Classics and Ancient History at
university, and developed an interest in the Roman
Wall, the subject of his talk. |

The topic for the talk – ‘Steam
at Tebay in the 1950’s’ would explore
another aspect of transport, the theme of the Society’s
forthcoming Summer Exhibition. |

in Shap |
The first meeting of the year for
Shap Local History Society welcomed almost thirty
members and friends. The speaker of the evening was
Wendy Fairer; who was assisted by Liz Amos operating
a Powerpoint presentation to illustrate the talk
on Transport in Shap. |

beginning for Methodism in Shap |
When members of the Methodist Church
in Shap learned that the chapel where they worshipped
would close at the beginning of 2006, they set about
seeking a venue where they could meet for worship |

Christmas
at Shap 2005. |
Christmas events in
Shap were varied, with something for all ages. A
Christmas service was held in Wasdale sheltered housing,
on Wednesday Revd Carole Marsden led an evening of ‘Carols
with Carole’. A service of carols by Candlelight
was held in the Methodist Chapel on Thursday evening.

St. Michael’s Church, Shap
was packed for the school Christmas presentation
on the history of Christmas celebrations throughout
the ages. Head teacher, Lois Whittaker welcomed the
audience, before the children from the Nursery formed
a traditional Nativity tableau at the chancel steps. |

The annual social event for Shap
Local History Society, and last gathering of the
year was held in the memorial hall, and attracted
a capacity attendance. As people arrived they were
greeted with a cup of hot mulled fruit juice. |
